ICCBS sets example for generation of energy.

KARACHI, Pakistan—The International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi (UoK) in Pakistan has installed a 200 ton (700 kW) air-conditioning plant that generates as much electricity as it consumes. The system consists of six 370 kVA (296 kW) and one 340 kVA (272 kW) gas-fired generators that are in operation round the clock. Several on-line UPSs, backed up by emergency diesel generators, also are installed in each building. This “triple-layer” energy matrix provides maximum protection for scientific instruments and may serve as a model for science institutions in the developing world, according to ICCBS director Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, Ph.D. He says the electricity requirements of developing countries such as Pakistan are rising significantly, while their power generation infrastructures have not improved accordingly. ICCBS had to install the system to protect its sophisticated research equipment from power failure and load shedding.
