Google Offers Glimpse Inside Its High-Tech Data Centers
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—Google is publicly sharing photos that display its massive and colorful data centers around the world. The online gallery includes its Council Bluffs, Iowa, data center, which has more than 115,000 ft2 (10 700 m2) of space. The Douglas County, Georgia, data center features colorful pipes that receive and send water for cooling the facility. Blue LEDs on rows of servers inform employees of system status. The LEDs are part of the 1,000 MW of renewable energy Google has purchased to power its data centers. Also, hundreds of fans are used to take hot air up and away from the racks, cool and recycle it. Google also shows its unconventional approaches to cooling, such as its data center in Finland, which sits on the shores of a frozen gulf.
